Just Voices is a Chorus of women who sing unaccompanied four-part harmony i.e: – a cappella – with voice parts Tenor, Lead, Baritone and Bass. We rehearse every Monday evening throughout the year (except Bank Holidays) and sing all our songs from memory. The chorus is an affiliated member of Making Music, which gives access to a number of resources. We are a not-for-profit group, and this is reflected in the low subscription.
More about us
In September 2006, a group of singers from a local barbershop chorus decided to form a new a cappella chorus. The objective was to be able to sing a more varied repertoire of songs from madrigals to pop.
Over the years, we have sung at various musical events, including the London South Bank Summer and Winter Festivals, Voices Now at The Roundhouse, Camden and the London Festival Fringe, part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival. Having twice reached the Final of the Top Choir Kent competition, organised by the Rotary Club of Canterbury, we were invited to sing at their Gala Concert in 2017. We have also taken part in the Youth Music Give-a-Gig Week and have sung for Livery Companies in the City of London.
We pride ourselves on being involved in fundraising events for local charities, including Harris HospisCare and The Maypole Project and we were honoured to sing at the “Serenade for The Few” to raise funds for the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum. In addition, we have organised events for the local community, including a commemoration of the end of WW1, sung at weddings and funerals and have entertained members of the WI and residents of care homes.
We aim to sing to the highest standards of which we are capable and to this end have regularly engaged many leading vocal coaches, either at our regular rehearsals or on residential weekends. As well as singing published arrangements, we have commissioned arrangements from local composers exclusively for Just Voices.
Just Voices’ first gig
The group of about a dozen singers took the name of Just Voices and met in the Green Street Green Village Hall. A recruitment drive in early 2007 resulted in an influx of so many new members that a larger hall was needed with more practice space so, in 2008, Just Voices moved to Bromley Common Baptist Church Hall, where we still rehearse.
Serenade for The Few
Just Voices has held its own concerts to raise funds for the Ripley Arts Centre and Harris HospisCare. The Chorus was also proud to raise over £1,300 by hosting a special musical event in the chapel for the Biggin Hill Memorial Museum, which opened in 2019.
Park Avenue Residents’ Association performance
In 2021, Just Voices celebrated its 15th birthday and intends to continue to be the happy, friendly group of singers it has been from the start. What we love best is singing and no-one should underestimate how much pleasure, fun and companionship we derive from that.
